If We See the Decline of the Cult of Aggressive Cricket, Let’s Enjoy Its Legacy.
The Evolution of a Cult is often characterized by specific steps.
1. The Grand Vision
An inspiring figure or leaders introduce a revolutionary approach offering a solution for struggling players.
And so it goes. Preparations are underway to challenge the establishment overseas. Tensions are rising. Signs of trouble appear from within. An isolated player, naked, nervous, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT smeared across his chest in chicken blood, has stumbled through the lines and is removed with discretion for a temporary assignment elsewhere.
Do you recall the start, when the world was still young? The days of Bazball 1.0, of pure instinct.
2. The Honeymoon Phase
Movement founders offer a new start, optimism ahead, support, success among a group with shared faith in the big idea.
How did it feel initially? A team united basking in glory. Tattoos. Muscles. Determination. Peak performance vibes. Of course, The team will claim Bazball doesn’t actually exist, amusingly as it’s denied, what was that spectacle?
However, everyone understands the concept. It’s Harry Brook playing a shot so unconventional it defies description. It’s the adrenaline of the captain in ultimate mode, a look that says: focused titan, beard made of wood, hair woven from beaver hide, truly contemporary you wouldn’t be surprised to look down and see him playing in the field bare-chested holding a fish.
It’s the opener still being allowed speaking publicly, out there looking like a cheerful animal smartly dressed, expressing thoughts like we’re challenging norms. Certainly, the energy, for a significant period, was uplifting.
3. Expansion Period
Development stage. Togetherness strengthened via memorization of key phrases. These principles may seem irrational as a loyalty check.
Am I alone? The criticism, the fury, the sense of betrayal post-defeat feels overblown, unwarranted. England batted badly on the field, as is typical there. They were torn apart while bowling in a short span as the bowling and captaincy fell apart, manipulated by Travis Head batting like England but better, responsive to the situation, a performer excelling with a kind of light around him.
And now we have this the criticism, the frustration, the view of the sport as a failure. The consensus is that losing isn’t enough, they must be humbled, to be cleansed, obliterated, defeated through sheer skill of the pace attack, the conventional tactics of Scott Boland, marking successes with a bashful smile like he’s just been given a rewarding prize. What impact will this have?
4. The Backlash Phase
Issues emerge due to setbacks. Yet, mistakes are denied. It turns to anger towards critics.
In truth, a few days before the next match, we have now reached an intriguing moment in the journey of this movement. Victory is possible in the next Test through aggressive play. Alternatively, defeat could come swiftly. And if they do lose it feels like we could be witnessing the decline.
Ahead of this, a couple of points to note about this. Previously, at the start, of passion and hope, I wrote an article suggesting Bazball was a cult. There was outrage, which was helpful as it’s known how to confirm lack of cult status is should followers respond with anger rejecting criticism of its truths.
What has happened lately is just as interesting. Criticism of the approach has now become the cult. Social media is furious, critical analysts, images of frustrated travelling fans disappointed by the short match, like a room full of investors demanding recourse.
On the other hand, exists the larger scene of the host’s complex deep-seated frustration towards the unconventional visitors, stating, the methods you value and have fostered and nurtured to distinguish yourselves culturally from us, well, it’s all a bit of a gag in the end old boy.
And this is the real point. It’s all cults. Bazball was a cult because cricket is a cult. In fact, the sport in England is closed, a group, an elite gathering, a restricted environment with centuries of opaque and ritualistic cult history supporting it. Historically, this was a place where power and access are hoarded. It’s the British pastime of the British, the pioneering brand. And surprisingly, Britain is itself a cult, a structure of hidden ranks, a monarchy still exists.
The players have been enclosed in this environment since childhood. Attempting to break free, to create a less brutal environment, they are simply replicating their past, building another enclosure, an exclusive group, but now with a new team and a coach encouraging individuality provided you conform.
Stay present. Confront risks. However much you change, things stay similar.
