White House Reveals Federal Worker Layoffs as Funding Gap Approaches Third Week
Administration officials disclosed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.
While Vought provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson noted that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services used by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in court.
This is shameful that the government has used the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to communities across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.
The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute
Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be ended soon.
During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP bill, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

Consequences for Employees

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
